Basic Computer Learning & Tips
Computer runs on an operating system such as Microsoft Windows, Linux, macOS, etc.
Microsoft Windows is most widely used operating system in the world.
Here, we will learn how computer is operated on Microsoft Windows.
To select any File / Folder / Icon: Point mouse arrow on that File or Icon and press mouse' right button.
To go to any File / Folder / Icon: Double click mouse's right button.
When we start our computer then we see "This PC" on desktop.
To see where all data of a computer is stored:
Go to "This PC" on desktop by DOUBLE CLICKING the mouse.
Then we see, Local Disk (C), Local Disk (D), Local Disk (E), etc.
All the software programme's data is stored in Local Disk (C) like Window's data files, Microsoft Office, etc.
We can save our data in any of the above Local Disks.
Files are data files of a Software Application and it is stored under a Folder.
Folders can be stored under a Folder.
A Folder can store many files and folders.
To store any File or Folder under a Folder we first COPY the File or Folder which is to be put under a Folder and then PASTE this in the required Folder.
To Copy: Select that File or Folder and then press keys Ctrl+C (first press Ctrl button and then press C without releasing Ctrl button).
We can also copy by using mouse. First select that File or Folder and then press mouse right button the we click on copy on the list.
To Paste: Go to the required Folder and then press keys Ctrl+V (first press Ctrl button and then press V without releasing Ctrl button)
We can also paste by using mouse. Go to the required Folder and then press mouse right button then click on paste on the list.
When we start our computer then we see various files and folders on the screen which is called DESKTOP of a computer.
Most useful computer applications that we should learn to learn computer is Microsoft Office applications such as MS Paint, MS Word & MS Excel.
To open MS Paint: Press Window+R and then type "mspaint" and press enter.
To open MS Word: Press Window+R and then type "winword" and press enter.
To open MS Excel: Press Window+R and then type "excel" and press enter.
Microsoft Word
MS Word is a software programme in which we can make any document.We can maintain text, picture, excel sheet and many more things in MS Word.It is mainly used for making documents such as letters, reports, etc.
Learn some basic short cut keys which is useful in MS Word.
To open MS Word: Press Window+R to and type "winword" and press enter.
To Copy: Ctrl+C
To Paste: Ctrl+V
To Cut: Ctrl+X
To find anything: Ctrl+F
To Find & Replace: Ctrl+G
To Save document: Ctrl+S
There are 7 types of Tab in MS word which is used to create a document.
1. Home: Here we can change font styles (size, colour, design, etc.), copy, paste, find replace, text alignment, etc.
2. Insert: Here we can insert pictures, tables,word arts, charts, etc.
3. Page Layout: Here we can set page margins, orientation (landscape / portrait), insert watermark, page colour, page borders, indent & spacing, etc.
4. References: Here we can make table of content of our document and insert other references.
5. Mailings: It is used for mail merging.
6. Review: Here we can search meanings of the words in the document & translation, etc.
7. View: Here we can change view mode of the document under "Document Views", enable or disable Rule, Gridlines and navigation pane, view one page or two page, switch window etc.
Important Functions of MS Word
Make & Save the Document in Word file or in PDF format:
First of all let's learn how we can make a proper document in MS word. While making a document we have to do other important things along with typing word. We cannot make a good looking document just only by typing words.
So, here we will learn some very useful functions in MS Word which we will need while making a document.
Open MS word, we will see a blank page. We can start writing in this page to start making our document.
Above image is of Home tab, here we can change font styling (size, colour, design, etc.)
There are 5 types of functions in Home tab:
1. Clipboard: Here we can Cut, Copy, Paste, Paste special any text and use format painter.
2. Font: Here we can select font style, size, colour, etc.
3. Paragraph: Here we can insert bullet styles, do text alignment, colour the background of text, adjust line & paragraph spacing, etc.
4. Styles: Here we select paragraph & text styles.
5. Editing: Here we can find, replace & select any text.
Some important short cut keys here are:
To make text bold press: Ctrl+B
To make text italic or slant press: Ctrl+I
To make text larger press: Ctrl+Shift+>
To make text smaller press: Ctrl+Shift+<
Text Alignment:
Text Alignment is used to start writing texts from Left, Right or Center.
We will find Alignment function in Paragraph section under Home tab.
Left Alignment:- If we want to start writing from Left side then click just before the first letter of the paragraph line and click on Align Text Left button in Paragraph section under Home tab. We can also use Short cut key for this: Ctrl+L
Right Alignment:- If we want to start writing from right side then click just before the first letter of the paragraph line and click on Align Text Right button in Paragraph section under Home tab. We can also use Short cut key for this: Ctrl+R
Center Alignment:- If we want to start writing from center then click just before the first letter of the paragraph line and click on Align Text Center button in Paragraph section under Home tab. We can also use Short cut key for this: Ctrl+E

Change Text from Capital to Small or from Capital to Small in MS Word:
To do this, select the words and press Shift+F3
Use of Find any text:
To do this, copy the text which is to be found and then press Ctrl+F paste that text and press enter.
Find & Replace any text:
Imagin if we have to replace a specific word with another word in a 5000 words document, in this case if we find this word manulally then this will take a huge time and effort.
So, in this case we will use Find & Replace function in MS Word and save our tremendous time and effort.
It is very useful function in MS Word which saves our time in Finding & Replacing a Word, Paragraph, Number.
We can replace a text by another text in whole document and can save our time.
To do this, copy the text which is to be replaced and select all the paragraph of the document from which text to be replaced then press Ctrl+G.
Shift + F3 = Change Text from Capital to Small or from Capital to Small in MS Word Ctrl + G = Find & Replace
We can also insert picture files in MS Word to save them in pdf or word file. This function is useful if we want to save front and back side of our Voter ID Card or any other document in pdf or word file.
To do this:
Go to Insert tab, then click Picture and then select picture file from the computer and click Insert button.
We can find the meaning of any word of any sentence. To do this:
Select that word, then press Alt and Right Click button of mouse at the same time.
